Be Still...

Updated: Sep 25, 2023

More and more I am beginning to wonder

if the answer is in stillness…

that there really is no question… or maybe there are too many questions

that somehow lose their urgency

in this invitation to be still... to be aware... to be open... to allow this moment just to be… and to sense the Spirit’s presence.

The comforting Spirit, who prays for us deep within when we don’t know what to say… The counseling Spirit, who takes our Beloved’s words and helps us make them our own… The Spirit of light, who lightens our darkness… The Spirit of Love, who rejoices over us with singing.

When Job ranted and demanded answers from God, God answered him with questions. It has taken me many years to get beyond feeling this was unfair. Richard Rohr says that the opposite of faith is not doubt, it is control. And God’s answer to Job was to show him how little control he really had.

Job rejected the kind of advice that has God all figured out and found himself in an even larger mystery.

There are those times when we persistently, passionately, and eloquently refuse to take silence for an answer… refuse to take clichés for an answer…. refuse to let God off the hook… when we’re doing everything right, and things go wrong…

Suffering calls our lives into question, and God’s answer is His presence.

Suffering can bring us into the mystery of God in ways that, as for Job, silence us…

and then open us to worship that is full of wonder.

“Be still and know that I AM GOD.”
